Workshop on Fair Assessment in University Classrooms
On September 22, 2016 the faculty members of the Department of the English Language, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, namely the Head of the Department of the English Language, Olha Polotska, associate professors Iryna Tkalia, Hanna Husieva, Nataliia Stupnytska, and senior lecturer Olha Matviichuk provided the workshop ‘Fair Assessment in University Classrooms’ for the Department colleagues. The aim of the workshop was to cascade the relevant information on the standards of and modern tendencies in language testing, the information obtained during the seminar that took place in Kyiv on September 10-13, 2016 and was held by Taras Shevchenko National University, the European Association for Language Testing and Assessment, and the All-Ukrainian Association for Language Testing and Assessment. The seminar was followed by the discussion and ideas sharing.
This experience is extremely useful for our University, considering the need to introduce innovative technologies in the process of language assessment.
On November 11, 13.00-15.00 a workshop TESTING SPEAKING SKILLS was held by UALTA in cooperation with the department of teaching Ukrainian and foreign languages and literatures of Institute of Philology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv. Teachers from Kyiv National Linguistic University participated in the workshop too.
The workshop was conducted by Olga Ukrainska, PhD, Associate Professor, H. Skovoroda National Pedagogical University of Kharkiv. The workshop participants were presented with and discussed a range of issues including a structure of speaking tasks, functions of rubrics, verbal and non-verbal types of input, classification(s) of tasks, choosing suitable task formats, requirements to rating scales, overview of some criteria, defining the construct to match assessment needs, analysis of some tasks constructed by teachers.
On November 17, 2016, the methodological seminar “Modern Tendencies in Language Testing and Assessment” was provided on the basis of the Department of Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages of Vinnytsia State Pedagogical University named after Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi. The report was presented by Dmitrenko Natalia, PhD. in Pedagogics, Associate Professor, who is a member of Ukrainian Association for Language Testing and Assessment.
Participants were presented materials about the scientific methodological workshop “Promoting Fair Assessment Practices in University Classrooms in Ukraine” (Institute of Postgraduate Education at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, 10-13 September, 2016) and discussed several methodological issues, among them: different techniques for testing, criteria for assessment of language skills and others.
The conducted workshop aroused interest of colleagues and increased the level of their methodological training in the field of language testing and assessment.
The seminar “The Cornerstones of Effective Testing” was held on November 24, 2016. It was provided within the context of the Ukrainian Association for Language Testing and Assessment. This seminar was held on the basis of the Department of English Phonetics and Grammar of Educational Scientific Institute of Foreign Languages, Bohdan Khmelnitsky National University at Cherkasy.
The objective of the seminar was to share the experience in language testing and assessment, and enhance the university teachers’ competence in testing.

On December 28, 2016 workshop “Understanding Assessment” was held at Volodymyr Hnatiuk Ternopil National Pedagogical University. The participants were teachers of English working at the Faculty of Foreign Languages.
The Department of the English Language and Methods of Teaching Professor Iryna Zadorozhna, Associate Professors Lyudmyla Babiy, Olha Datskiv, Iryna Oliynyk, Maryana Natsiuk, Oksana Sernyak, Peace Corpse Volunteer Phil Quam presented modern approaches to assessment of FL skills. The participants in EALTA-funded workshop of Ukrainian Association for Language Testing and Assessment (UALTA) that was held on September 10-14 in Kyiv shared their knowledge gained during the four days of the convention as well as own experience of implementing new forms of assessment in teaching practice.
