On May19, UALTA, in cooperation with the department of Foreign Languages Teaching and Applied Linguistics (Institute of Philology, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv), held a workshop on testing and assessing Grammar skills of Linguistics majors. Approaches to teaching Grammar at a University level was another issue addressed by the keynote presenters – Drs Olga Kvasova and Tamara Kavytska.
In the course of the discussion the participants made an attempt to design the most suitable pattern of Grammar teaching methodology for University students of Linguistics. In particular, the problems under discussion included: theoretical framework of teaching Grammar at a University level; teaching methodology that meets the needs of Linguistics majors; most suitable teaching material and effective exercises to shape consciousness-raising attitude of students towards learning Grammar.
The second part of the workshop focused on testing and assessing Grammar skills of Linguistics majors. The approaches to Grammar testing and assessment were highlighted and discussed. The participants also tried their hands at writing Grammar test items and designing a module test for students of Linguistics.
